Guided reading
We have daily guided reading sessions in all classes and our teachers record our progress as we read. These sessions focus on developing reading and comprehension skills. We use Read Write Inc comprehension books, Rigby Star and sets of books from well-known authors.
Our School Library
We visit our library regularly to choose books that we enjoy. There are a range of fantastic fiction and non-fiction books to choose from.
We have been focusing on developing our knowledge of authors so our Library Coordinator has been very busy filling our library with books by new authors for us.
Parents in Partnership
Our mums and dads come along to our parent workshops and ‘Family Learning’ sessions for Reception parents to find out about how to support us at home with our reading. We are expected to read at home every night and to bring our book bags to school every day. We also have homework diaries and our teachers write comments to our parents about our reading. If we read at least 4 times a week at home we get a stamp and have a chance to win a book every week in celebration assembly.
Reading for Pleasure
We have Reading for Pleasure books in every class. We can choose books to read and we change the books in this box regularly. Sometimes we even bring books from home in to add to this box.
Book Weeks
We have two book weeks every year where the focus is on discovering new authors. In these weeks we have visiting authors and reading challenges. We have had various themes including an Olympic challenge week and our school council plan & evaluate these weeks.
Teachers as Readers
Every day at our teachers read to us from a range of different stories, poems and even non-fiction texts. We would thoroughly recommend reading aloud to children preferably with different voices for the characters!
Reading Buddies
Once a week we have Reading Buddies. Older children read with younger children and help them with how to read unknown words and talk about the text. This helps to develop the confidence of the older children too! We are also trialing a ‘reading champion’ initiative this year where children are given the role of promoting reading across the school.
Reading Across the Curriculum
We enjoy using our reading skills in every lesson and our teachers provide opportunities for us to do so in all subjects. In every class there is a book corner filled with books to support our ‘Mantle of the Expert’ lessons where we are challenged to undertake independent research and teachers often use challenging texts in these lessons to really get us thinking!
Teaching Phonics – RWI
We use the RWI scheme to teach synthetic phonics in Reception and KS1. Children take home graded books that match the sounds in the scheme. Find out more from the Read Write Inc site.
Also here are two great sites PhonicsPlayand Family Learning which are brilliant to support phonics learning.
eBooks
If you would like access to some fantastic eBooks, why not visit www.oxfordowl.co.uk. There are over 260 free books for parents to read with their child at home with lots of ideas on how to support your child with reading.
If you would like to know more about reading at Mrs Watkins or Mr Richards who will tell you more.
